Until recently, the name of Anton von Hohenwart (1768–1846) was virtually absent from the local cultural consciousness of Krško, let alone from wider public awareness. The man who spent the last three and a half decades of his life in Krško left an enduring mark on the town on the Sava, the full significance of which became apparent only two centuries later. Hohenwart may justifiably be regarded as the founder of museum culture in Krško, as he not only collected objects of historical value, particularly documents, but also made them accessible to those eager to see them. The house in which he lived after his retirement and where he died thus became the first museum in Krško—and has once again become a museum today, for the third time in its history. In accordance with his will, the most important objects from Hohenwart’s collection eventually became part of the Carniolan Provincial Museum in Ljubljana. Hohenwart also deserves attention because of his connection with the preservation of the memory of his relative, the polymath Janez Vajkard Valvasor (1641–1693).
