The third volume in the series of historical-topographical handbooks covers the territory of the southern half of the Slovenian part of the Duchy of Styria up to the year 1500. It includes 3019 toponyms—villages, hamlets, market towns, cities, castles, manors, field and water names, and others—along with their historical variants as attested in sources up to 1500 (such as charters, urbaria, feudal, accounting, notarial, and cartulary records). The entries are arranged alphabetically, and each historical form of a name is accompanied by the date of its attestation, a reference to the source in which it appears, the location of the source (archive, library, etc.), and, when applicable, its publication reference. The corpus as a whole contains over 9482 paleonyms appearing in 17.148 different historical sources.
The work is based on 65 documented charter collections and over 220 codices and manuscripts from mainly Slovenian and Austrian archives.
The handbook, together with an accompanying web application linked to a map will undoubtedly be of interest to experts from various academic disciplines (historians, geographers, archaeologists, ethnologists, linguists, etc.) as well as amateur historians and local history enthusiasts.
